چکیده
Two groups of college students were selected on the basis of their scores on the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES). The highDES group (score > 20, M = 29.6; n = 54) and low-DES group (score < 10, M = 5.1; n = 54) both completed the standard and a new dualtask version of the Stroop ink-naming task with xs (baseline condition) and color, neutral, and emotionally charged words. Free recall results indicated that high-DES participants remembered fewer emotionally charged words than low-DES participants. We found a crossover interaction for Stroop interference: High-DES participants showed more interference (conflicting color – baseline latency for ink naming) in a selective-attention Stroop task and less interference in the dualtask Stroop task. The interaction between attentional context and dissociation for Stroop interference and the free recall results are consistent with a cognitive-environments view of dissociative tendencies. In this view, dissociative tendencies, which have been otherwise speculated to be largely deleterious, can be advantageous in certain

Maltreated children's memory: accuracy, suggestibility, and psychopathology.
Memory, suggestibility, stress arousal, and trauma-related psychopathology were examined in 328 3- to 16-year-olds involved in forensic investigations of abuse and neglect. Children's memory and suggestibility were assessed for a medical examination and venipuncture. Being older and scoring higher in cognitive functioning were related to fewer inaccuracies. In addition, cortisol level and traum...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Alexithymia and Dissociation in an Adolescent Sample
Putnam (1) describes dissociation as a complex psychopathological process that occurs on a continuum ranging from minor normative dissociations to psychiatric conditions. The descriptive DSM approach identifies the essential feature of the dissociative disorders as ‘disruption in the usually integrated functions of consciousness, memory, identity, or perception of the environment’ (2). Adolesce...
متن کاملThe relationship between dissociative tendencies and schizotypy: an artifact of childhood trauma?
Previous research has suggested a relationship between dissociative tendencies and schizotypy. This study sought to extend the previous work in two fundamental respects. First, explicit cognizance was taken of the multidimensionality of both dissociative tendencies and schizotypy. Second, the study examined the possibility that the observed correlation between dissociative tendencies and schizo...
متن کاملHypnotic Susceptibility, or F-bias: Its Relevance to Eating Disorders
Hypnosis research and theory has recently paid increasing attention to hypnotizability as a trait in its own right and to a convergence with ideas in neuropsychology. Hypnotizability, or F-bias, may be broadly characterized as involving focused attention, flexibility in switching cognitive styles and the activity of frontal cortical systems. F-bias/hypnotizability correlates with a number of ac...
متن کاملDissociative tendencies and individual differences in high hypnotic suggestibility.
INTRODUCTION Inconsistencies in the relationship between dissociation and hypnosis may result from heterogeneity among highly suggestible individuals, in particular the existence of distinct highly suggestible subtypes that are of relevance to models of psychopathology and the consequences of trauma. This study contrasted highly suggestible subtypes high or low in dissociation on measures of hy...
